There is a series of waterfalls located on Shays Run in Blackwater Falls State Park. These four magnificent waterfalls are known as Elakala Falls. Starting at the Blackwater Falls Lodge look for a trail on the left hand side of the parking area. A gravel path leads to a wooden footbridge that overlooks the first waterfall. The main trail continues past the first fall and through the woods to an overlook of all the waterfalls. Now here is where it gets tricky. To reach the rest of the waterfalls a lot of scrambling and bush whacking are involved. Right after the first waterfall look for a path that shoots off to the right of the main trail. This path starts the journey to reach the falls of Elakala. None of the way is marked and a lot is a guess as to which path to take. I suggest the proper footwear is worn due to the fact a lot of the ground is moss covered and very slippery. From the first waterfall look for a worn path that leads further down Shays Run. This is the path. Crawl though rhododendron tunnels and wind through down trees and rock faces and come to Elakala Falls number 2. After taking in the second waterfall continue to follow what appears to be an animal trail leading down the side of the mountain and trailing close to the water. Be careful of where foot placement is throughout the trail near the water. A lot of the ground is placed on top of tree roots and falling through can happen. After climbing through more rhododendron and butt sliding down multiple rocky hillsides Elakala Falls number 3 should be in view. I always try and take photos from the large bolder in front of the falls but as always this tricky rock is very slick. Watch your step. From here to reach the forth waterfall you must cross the stream and continue down the other side. Now if the third waterfall was a tough one to get too then I wouldn't consider trying to attempt the forth waterfall. This one is worse then all the others. A lot of people turn back after scrambling to the base of the first waterfall.
