Kings Hollow Tunnel is the lesser known of the two tunnels located along the Moonville Rail Trail. The tunnel can be reached by hiking down the rail trail from the Moonville Tunnel, but due to heavy rains and numerous crossings of Raccoon Creek we had to find an alternate route. There are a number of crossings that no longer have the trestles that were linked to the rail line so be prepared when flood is a factor. There are multiple ways to drive to the Kings Hollow Tunnel and a quick Google search will put you on the right path. At the intersection of Rock Camp Road and Kings Hollow Road look for a small pull off on the left hand side of the road. The rail trail picks up to the right of this pull off and the tunnel is located about a half a mile from the main road. If you don't mind a slight trek though the woods there is another small pull off located on Kings Hollow Road. This will also take you to the tunnel with less walking required. Be warned there are a few streams to wade if taking this route.
Kings Hollow Tunnel was built around 1855 by the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad. The tunnel later became part of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad and then the CSX before it became completely abandoned in the 1980s. The tunnel measures 355ft long, 15ft wide, and 120ft tall. The tunnel itself is lined by a series of 12 x 12 wooden beams and carved through rock.
