Nuttalburg and Nuttalburg Coal Mine are some of the best preserved historical structures in the New River Gorge Area. The tipple, head house, and tipple house have all been restored to give visitors a taste of what working in the coal region was once like, Be sure to give enough time to explore the area. There are enough structures and hiking trails to keep anyone busy all day. To reach Nuttalburg a narrow windy road must be traveled. As of summer of 2018 this road is curenly closed to all traffic except local. As of now there are no plans to reopen Keeneys Creek Road. We took a chance and decided to try the road anyway just to see how bad the damage was. The state has not maintained the road at all since the closure. The condition of the road was very questionable in spots due to slips, rock slides, and downed trees. Between the second and third bridge along Keeneys Creek Road and major slip has formed and is the cause of the closure. This slip has caved in the road bad enough that a larger vehicle may not be able to pass. Keep in mind that this road is in terrible condition if deciding to travel.
Hopefully the state has a change of heart and reopens Nuttalburg to visitors. This once booming coal town is a piece of West Virginia coal history.
